Why surround sound at all: 5.1, 7.1, and Dolby Atmos in simple terms

Regular stereo sound (2.0) comes from two speakers on the left and right. That's enough for music, but for movies, it's a bit lacking. Surround sound adds several more channels: a center channel for dialogue, rear channels for effects behind you, and a subwoofer for low frequencies.

The numbers in format names are easy to decode. 5.1 means five speakers (front left and right, center, two rear) and one subwoofer. 7.1 adds two more side speakers, the sound becomes denser, but you also need a larger room. Dolby Atmos goes further: height channels are added to the horizontal plane (speakers on the ceiling or upward-firing). In practice, the difference is immediately noticeable. In a rain scene, 5.1 gives you "rain all around," while Atmos gives you "drops falling on your head from above." Atmos is worth getting when the budget is not tightly constrained and you want maximum immersion.

Where to get content with surround sound

Hardware alone doesn't play anything; you need a source with a multi-channel track. Here's where to get it in 2026.

Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray. Physical discs still deliver the highest quality: lossless audio without compression, full support for Atmos and DTS:X. A single Blu-ray with a movie is 30-50 GB of data, of which up to 10 GB is audio. Streaming can't handle that much.

Music. Apple Music and Tidal offer tracks in Dolby Atmos. It sounds unusual, but the instruments are genuinely placed in space, which is especially noticeable on concert recordings and symphonic music.

An important point: not every movie on streaming comes with Atmos. Before watching, check for the Dolby Atmos icon on the movie's card. If it's not there, you'll get regular stereo or 5.1, regardless of your hardware.

Soundbar, ready-made kit, or custom build: what to choose

There are three paths to surround sound at home. Each has its own budget, complexity, and quality ceiling.

Soundbar. A single flat speaker under or in front of the TV, sometimes with a separate subwoofer. Advanced models (Samsung HW-Q990D, Sony HT-A9) can do reflected Atmos through upward-firing drivers. The downside: you can't cheat physics. Reflected sound will never compare to real speakers on the ceiling. A soundbar is a compromise for minimalism. Ready-made "out of the box" kit (HTIB, Home Theater in a Box). A receiver, five speakers, and a subwoofer in one set. The manufacturer has already selected compatible components. The price is lower than a custom build, but upgrade options are limited. A good start for a first system: unpack, position according to the instructions, turn on.

Custom build. You choose the AV receiver, front speakers, center channel, rear speakers, and subwoofer separately. Maximum flexibility and quality, but also the maximum budget. The receiver is the brain of the system: all sources (Blu-ray player, console, TV set-top box) connect to it, it decodes formats and distributes an amplified signal to the speakers. An entry-level budget Denon or Yamaha will cost a few hundred dollars, a solid mid-range model is noticeably more expensive.

Step-by-step home theater assembly

Step 1: Choosing the room

The ideal room is rectangular, with a door that closes, and no echo. Avoid square rooms: in them, standing waves from the bass create "booming" in the corners and dropouts in the center. If the room is square, it's not a death sentence, but you'll need more acoustic panels on the walls.

A carpet on the floor, curtains on the windows, and soft furniture are your friends. They dampen sound reflections from hard surfaces. Bare laminate flooring and glass cabinet fronts are the enemies of good sound.

Step 2: Selecting the acoustics

Start with the receiver, it's the heart of the system. In 2026, the relevant minimum is: support for 4K/120 Hz and 8K passthrough for games, Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, eARC for the audio return channel from the TV. Denon AVR-X2800H or Yamaha RX-V6A are proven mid-range models.

  • Rear speakers: behind and to the side of the viewer, at a 110-120 degree angle, slightly above ear level (by 60-90 cm).
  • Subwoofer: in the front part of the room, not in a corner (a corner gives boomy bass). You'll find the exact spot during the calibration step.

For an Atmos system, add a pair of height speakers: either in-ceiling above the viewer, or modules on top of the front speakers that fire sound upward to reflect off the ceiling.

Step 4: Connection and cabling

Use copper speaker cable, 2.5 mm² cross-section for the fronts and center, 1.5 mm² for the rears. Strictly observe polarity: red to red, black to black on all speakers. If you reverse the phase on one, the bass will disappear (the speakers will start canceling each other out at low frequencies).

HDMI cables should be Ultra High Speed (certified 48 Gbps). Sources (Blu-ray player, console, set-top box) connect to the receiver's inputs. One cable runs from the receiver's output to the TV via the eARC port. The scheme is simple: all sources → receiver → TV.

Before turning it on, check every contact. A short circuit caused by a stray wire strand is the most frustrating reason for a receiver to go into protection mode.

After setting up the sources, run a test disc or the receiver's built-in noise generator; each speaker should respond in turn.

Step 6: Sound calibration

All modern receivers have a room correction system: Audyssey (Denon/Marantz), YPAO (Yamaha), Dirac Live (Onkyo/Pioneer/Arcam). A microphone comes in the box; place it at the viewer's spot, at ear level, and run the auto calibration.

The system will sequentially run test signals through each speaker, measuring distances, volume, and frequency response, taking the room's acoustics into account. The result: delays are aligned (sound from all speakers reaches the viewer simultaneously), volume is balanced, frequency dips are compensated.

Step 7: System upgrade and expansion

  • Second subwoofer. Two subwoofers in different spots in the room even out the bass picture better than one, even an expensive one. Place them diagonally or against opposite walls.
  • Acoustic panels. Foam "pyramid" panels don't work well. Get panels made of mineral wool or acoustic foam at least 5 cm thick, and place them at the first reflection points (walls where sound from the front speakers hits at an angle and travels to the viewer).
  • Height channels. If the receiver supports Atmos but you don't have ceiling speakers yet, add them. This is the most noticeable leap in immersion after moving from stereo to 5.1.

Choose a separate subwoofer to match the room size: for rooms up to 20 meters, a 10-inch driver is enough; for larger spaces, look at 12-inch models. The amplifier also matters: a separate power amplifier for the front speakers relieves the receiver and provides volume headroom for dynamic scenes.

Is Dolby Atmos necessary in a small room?

In a room of 12-15 square meters, Atmos works, but with a nuance. Height channels reveal themselves with a ceiling distance of 2.4-2.7 meters and proper reflection geometry. If the ceiling is low (2.2 meters) or the room is square, the difference from 5.1 will be minimal. Invest your budget in higher-quality front speakers and a subwoofer instead of chasing Atmos.

Can I use old speakers from a music center?

You can, but with caveats. Passive speakers with 6 or 8 Ohm impedance will work. Active ones (with a built-in amplifier and power cord) will not: the receiver outputs an amplified signal, and double amplification will kill both the speakers and the receiver. The main problem with old speakers is different sensitivity. If the center channel sounds louder than the fronts, the system will never calibrate evenly. The main rule that will save you the most money: don't try to buy "top-tier right away." Assemble a basic 5.1 system, live with it for six months, understand what's missing, and then buy additional components in a targeted way. In most cases, a second subwoofer and two acoustic panels give you more than replacing the receiver with a model that costs three times as much.
