
🔧 Backlight bleed on Samsung TV: causes, diagnostics and solutions
You turn on your favorite movie, switch off the light, and instead of deep black, the screen shows murky whitish patches in the corners. Or worse: it's a sunny day, and the picture has turned into a mirror where you see your own living room better than a scene from Dune.
Backlight bleed and glare on a Samsung TV are infuriating precisely because that's not what you paid for. You paid for QLED contrast, rich HDR, and black that should actually be black. What you got was a light show.
The good news is that in 7 out of 10 cases, the problem is solved without a service center. Sometimes with no tools at all: five minutes in the settings menu, and the screen pleases the eye again. Other cases require more serious diagnostics, but even then there's no need to panic, replacing the LED backlight costs several times less than a new TV.

Why backlight issues appear on a Samsung screen
The nature of light issues varies, and the strategy for dealing with them depends on it. I roughly divide them into three categories.
External glare. Sunlight from a window, a floor lamp opposite the screen, a glossy floor reflecting a lamp. This is not a TV defect, it's physics. Glossy panels (and most Samsung QLEDs are exactly that) deliver excellent color reproduction but act like a mirror under side lighting.
Backlight unevenness (clouding / backlight bleed). Appears as light patches or bands on dark scenes. A characteristic of LED TVs with edge-lit or direct-lit backlighting: light from the LEDs is distributed through a light guide panel, and "breakthrough" occurs at the seams or at points of frame pressure. Most noticeable on a completely black background.
Hardware defect of LED strips. Detached diffuser lenses, burnt-out diodes, phosphor degradation from overheating. The typical symptom is a bright spot the size of a coin that doesn't change when the content changes. According to repair shop statistics (iFixit, 2025), Samsung LED strips most often fail in the 3rd to 7th year of operation with daily use.
A simple test will help you understand what you're dealing with. Turn off all the lights in the room, display a dark screensaver or a completely black background, and look at the screen. If the patches change position when you change the viewing angle, it's glare. If they stay in place, the problem is in the backlight.
Diagnostics: the flashlight test and built-in Samsung tools
Before ordering parts or calling a technician, spend five minutes on diagnostics. Samsung has baked a useful tool into the firmware, and the folk flashlight test will tell you more than guessing on forums.
Built-in picture test
Go to Settings → Support → Self Diagnosis → Picture Test. The TV will display a test image. If there are no light issues on it, the problem is in the signal source or settings. If the defects are visible on the test image too, the source is inside the TV, we dig deeper.
Flashlight test
The most reliable way to distinguish a backlight failure from a problem with the panel or T-Con board:
- Turn on the TV and feed it any signal (even the Smart Hub menu).
- In a dark room, bring your phone's flashlight right up to the screen at roughly a 45° angle.
- Look closely at the illuminated area, if you see a dim but discernible image, the backlight is dead, while the panel and board are alive.
- Go over all corners with the flashlight. If one edge lights up and another doesn't, part of the LED strips has failed.
If the flashlight revealed no image at all, the problem is deeper (main board, T-Con, ribbon cable), and you can't do without a service center.
Checking via the service menu (optional)
For advanced users: the factory Samsung service menu shows extended information about backlight errors. To enter, use the remote key combination (Mute → 1 → 8 → 2 → Power on a turned-off TV), but do not change any values there, just view the logs. Incorrect editing of calibration registers turns the TV into a brick.
Software methods: what you can fix in 5 minutes

Disable Eco Mode and adaptive brightness
Samsung likes to enable energy saving by default. Settings → General → Power and Energy Saving → Brightness Optimization, turn it off. Eco Mode suppresses the backlight unevenly, especially on dark scenes, and creates the illusion of a clouding effect where the panel is physically fine.
Also disable Ambient Light Detection (auto brightness), the ambient light sensor often errs in semi-darkness and pushes the backlight to maximum, exposing all panel unevenness.
Reset picture settings
Years of experimenting with contrast, brightness, and gamma may have driven the panel into a suboptimal mode. Settings → Picture → Expert Settings → Reset Picture Mode resets everything to factory values. After the reset, set the following:

Update the firmware
Samsung periodically fixes backlight control algorithms in updates. Settings → Support → Software Update → Update Now. There have been cases where a firmware update removed clouding that appeared on specific batches of panels with certain LED drivers.
Cold reboot (power cycle)
Sometimes the backlight controller gets stuck in an intermediate state. Unplug the TV from the outlet for 60 seconds. While the plug is out, press and hold the power button on the TV body for 30 seconds, this will discharge the power supply capacitors and reset the controller. After turning it on, check the screen on a black background.
Hardware methods: when settings didn't help
If tests confirmed the problem is hardware, here are the options from simple to complex.
Anti-glare film
For external glare that can't be eliminated by rearranging furniture. Matte anti-glare film is applied directly to the screen and works as a filter: it scatters incident light, turning a mirror reflection into a soft glow. Price ranges from 800 to 3000 UAH depending on the diagonal. The downside is it slightly reduces sharpness (it won't replicate the heavy anti-glare of office monitors, but micro-detail drops a bit).
Get film for your specific diagonal, universal rolls that require trimming produce bubbles and an uneven edge. Before application, the screen must be degreased, and the operation should be done in the bathroom after a shower (humid air knocks down dust).
Adjusting pressure screws and the frame
A common cause of local light issues along the edges is uneven frame pressure on the panel. Over time, the case screws loosen or, conversely, are overtightened from the factory. Carefully (with the TV turned off and unplugged!) tighten or slightly loosen the screws around the perimeter of the back cover, literally by a quarter turn. Sometimes this is enough to make the spot disappear.
Doesn't work? Remove the back cover and check if a ribbon cable or a case element is pressing on the light guide panel. Dozens of cases are described on Samsung Community forums where a factory ribbon cable, routed too tightly, created a bright spot the size of a palm.
Replacing LED strips (DIY)
The most radical and most effective method. LED strips are a consumable: rated lifespan is 40,000-60,000 hours, but real degradation starts earlier due to overheating (especially at maximum brightness).
What you'll need:
- A set of new LED strips for your model (search by the model code on the TV's label), price depends on the diagonal and the seller, AliExpress is traditionally cheaper than local stores
- Torx screwdrivers (Samsung uses star heads)
- Plastic spudgers for releasing the case clips
- Silicone suction cups for removing the panel (working in pairs is strongly recommended)
- Thermal paste or thermal tape for securing the new strips
Important: the panel is a glass sandwich 2-3 mm thick. It is removed and placed ONLY flat, the slightest tilt while suspended means a crack. If you're not confident in your hands, give it to a technician. The cost of backlight replacement at a service center depends on the diagonal and region, but in any case it is many times cheaper than a new TV.

When you need a service center
Go to a technician if:
- the flashlight test showed no image (the problem is deeper than the backlight);
- the TV is under warranty (any opening of the case voids it);
- the diagonal is 65"+ (removing a panel of that size alone is dangerous);
- the light issue is accompanied by flickering or clicking sounds from the power supply.

Prevention: how not to kill the backlight prematurely
LEDs dislike two things: overheating and voltage surges. Three simple rules that will extend the panel's life:
- Don't crank Backlight to 50 out of 50. Comfortable evening viewing is 25-30, daytime with a sunny room is 35-40. This noticeably reduces the thermal load on the LEDs compared to constant maximum brightness.
- Install a voltage stabilizer or at least a surge protector. The Samsung power supply is sensitive to surges, and an impulse spike can blow the LED driver.
- Once a month, wipe the ventilation slots on the back cover. Dust = a blanket for heat dissipation = overheating of the LED strips.

How are light issues different from dead pixels?
A dead pixel is a dot the size of a needle's eye that is always black (dead subpixel) or always colored (stuck). A light issue is a blurry spot ranging from coin to palm size that is visible only on a dark background. Dead pixels cannot be fixed without replacing the panel, light issues often can be.
Why is my Samsung under warranty, but the light issues are not recognized as a defect?
Manufacturers consider a certain level of backlight unevenness to be normal. Samsung's tolerance for brightness deviation is specified in internal warranty policies for retail, specific figures depend on the model and diagonal. If there are many spots or they are in the center of the screen, insist on an expert assessment. The main argument: photograph the screen on a completely black background in a dark room and attach the photo to your claim.
Does anti-glare film ruin picture quality?
Matte film slightly reduces perceived sharpness, micro-contrast (textures, small fonts) is softened a bit. But if you watch TV during the day in a sunny living room, the difference between "visible with glare" and "visible without glare" outweighs any loss of sharpness.
Can you fix the LED backlight without replacing the whole strip?
Technically yes, by resoldering a burnt-out diode. But the neighboring diodes on the same strip operated in the same thermal regime and are most likely on their way out too. Replacing one diode gives you a repair that lasts 2-4 months, then the next one pops up. Replace the entire strip.
Is it worth buying a TV with a matte screen to forget about light issues forever?
Matte panels (Samsung The Frame, some LG QNED models) indeed do not glare. But they lose to glossy ones in color reproduction and contrast, it's a trade-off: "picture like in a cinema, but only in the evening" versus "picture a bit simpler, but at any time of day."

And remember: an expensive TV shouldn't infuriate you with light spots. In the vast majority of cases, the problem is solvable.
