  • The indicator lights up, charging proceeds, the adapter is fine, the problem was a loose contact or the wall outlet.
  • The indicator stays off, but the laptop runs on battery, the signal is not getting through. The culprit is either the laptop port or the power adapter.
  • The laptop won't turn on at all, the battery is drained, try a known-good adapter (from a colleague, from an old laptop with the same connector). Did it work? The culprit is found.

1. Laptop brand and model

The most reliable method is to search for a laptop charger by the exact model. The model number is on the bottom of the laptop: Lenovo ThinkPad T480, HP ProBook 450 G8, Dell Latitude 5420, and so on. Sellers use it to pick an adapter with guaranteed compatibility.

Don't search for "HP charger" in general, within a single brand there are dozens of different connectors and voltages. The model is your main filter.

2. Connector

The connector must match physically, otherwise the adapter simply won't fit into the port. Main types:

Short answer: in the vast majority of cases it's more cost-effective to buy a new one. Repairing a power adapter means working with a switching power supply in a sealed housing. Opening the housing (it's often snapped shut or potted with compound), diagnosing board components, and replacing a burnt element is comparable in labor cost to the price of a new quality adapter.

There are exactly three situations where repair is justified:

  • Only the cable is damaged. The wire from the brick to the plug is cut, but the brick itself is intact, any technician will replace the cable in 15-20 minutes.
  • A rare or discontinued adapter. For old and exotic models a new original is no longer available. Then repair is the only option.

It depends on the wattage. A smartphone charger won't "drive" a laptop that needs 45W or more: the charging indicator may light up, but the battery will discharge faster than it charges.
